Cultural Nutrition is another class I am taking through Palomar's Family and Consumer Science, FCS 150. Amazon has matched Barnes & Noble's member price for the book at $94.65 but was not available. But just like my other textbook for this semester, we opted for the ebook available for 6 months. It too is $61.99
We found access http://cengagebrain.com. It is much like http://coursesmart.com BUT it can be viewed on multiple systems/computers or locations at one time - yes the hubby checked - and that is a good thing so we can do some work without telling the other to log off in order to get to it, especially as I can see that he would like to work on this class more than the other =)
My books from Amazon and the local public libraries. There is little difference between those who cannot read and those who will NOT read- The result of both is ignorance.- Jim Rohn

Family Now - Textbook for Family & Consumer Sciences ISBN 0205632513
Bad News:
Class has already started and Amazon said it would take 1-3 weeks to get the book despite me opting for 2 day shipping. My bookstore had it for $126.15 but with the worst rain in years, I just was not going to drive over to campus.
Good News:
Technology has come to save me with the availability of eBooks. Through www.coursesmart.com, I was able to get an electronic version of the book for 180 days, ample time to get through the class. I am able to print the book if I would like. The best part? It costs only $61.99.
The only drawback is that I cannot have the ebook open on two laptops or systems. Why does it matter? If I was at home reading the book, my hubby with the same class cannot log on on his system (at home or at work) to read the ebook. It is understandable why they do this but the point of an ebook is to surpass the limitations of standard books and to have access electronically at all times. Oh well; nonetheless, yay for $61.99!!!
Food: A Taste of the Road (Travelers' Tales)
I just picked up the book today at the Border's nearest home using a 30% off coupon. I have only read a few pages of it and so far like it. It is a collection of people, mostly Americans, who travel around the world and at home discovering places through its food. The introduction mentioned one of the contributors as a recent homeless man who talks about his dumpster-diving for food.
It is for a required book for my FCS 105 Cultural Nutrition class through Palomar College and will probably be the favorite for the semester.
It quickly hit home for me as the books opens with a story of a mother and son on a mission to find a restaurant in a remote town below the Tropic of Capricorn as her son's blood sugar, due to diabetes brought on by genetics, was dropping and had no emergency candy with him. I was reading this as I sat in KP's Pharmacy to pick up my glucometer because I have to begin testing my blood sugars or I risk he health of me and my unborn child. My name was called before I could read whether or not they found a restaurant in time for her son. I shall continue reading tonight.

Top Secret Recipes book
I just picked up a new book from my nearest Costco. I usually hold out on books despite really wanting it but I just had to have this one.
Reasons for buying this book:
1) To curb my sporadic sadness knowing that i will not be able to eat a dish because it might have MSG.
2) To not worry about $ but still have a taste of outside meals by duping restaurant dishes at home when I want it most.
3) Since lots of the dishes I have never tried and not willing to risk $ for something not so good, this would be a cheaper alternative. In addition, if I don't like it, I have a great variety of stuff to make it to my liking.
4) This book would provide much ease on the mind than it is to take 2 kids and the aforementioned reasons to a restaurant with me.
The recipe I would like to try first is Cheesecake Factory's Bang Bang Chicken.

Will you take the 40 Love Dare Challenge? Starts today, January 6, 2010 to Valentine's day!
There are 40 days to Valentine's Day from today, January 6. Will you invest in yourself and your marriage and take the LOVE DARE CHALLENGE? Go to the 'challenge link' daily (or listen live to http://klove.com on PC live or 100.1 FM San Diego radio in the morning) and get the CHALLENGE of the day. Day 1 can be found here: http://klove.com/BLOG/post/2010/01/06/Day-1-of-The-Love-Dare.aspx
Day 1 Dare: The first part of this dare is fairly simple. Although love is communicated in a number of ways, our words often reflect the condition of our heart. For the next day, resolve to demonstrate patience and to say nothing negative to your spouse at all. If the temptation arises, choose not to say anything. It’s better to hold your tongue than to say something you’ll regret.

posted on a thread under a link DR posted of his books on sale for 50% off:
DR is not making you buy a book like the government makes you pay your taxes. for these guys against him, is that some kind of socialist and entitlement thinking that his stuff should be all free? there are costs and we have a choice here to partake. and have we not learned than nothing is ever completely free - just supplemented by someone else - usually you without a choice - and if it were ever stated as Free, it is a total lie as someone always pays.
We have bought The Total Money Make Over, about $300 more of DR books and materials, and subscribe to online resources for our home. Some $ was spent for our closest friends and family BY CHOICE to invest in our lives and theirs if they care to read it. In return, DR material have gotten us in gear and focus. 26k paid off in 14 months was the greatest ROI we've ever made. Before DR as we had no clue or sense of direction in our financial mess and we have tried those "free services" which were cons and rip-offs or something that would temporarily make things better but open another trap door in the future. Before DR, we had no legit and noble direction in what to do financially. Until we heard him very late one night on an AM radio station here. It has changed our lives - definitely more than a college degree has that cost us $50k in school debt.
Some books are at the library, but that "free resource" is not reliable enough for me, as i need and like to refer back to the book in my leisure. The public and "free" radio show is a treat but our local station only plays 1 hour of his 3 hour daily show so that sucks so we chose to subscribe. Only thing we don't use of DR is him on tv as cable at this point is just not justifiable with its costs and our existing loans, so we choose to not have cable.
I see daily and on here that some people just like to spend their waking moments bashing those who are better off than them.. especially people such as DR who do it by helping others by presenting choices - not demands - and still continue to make money at the same time. why are people like DR seen as bad people but yet another who chooses to live in a poor state of mind and off of others' hard work is seen as acceptable and even noble?
In a different light, for you socialists and freebie lovers, let DR keep earning money so he can make more $ so the government can have more $ to take and fund the tax pot for those people who willingly leach and drain the system, spending our day's earnings and yet still have cable and cellphones in their homes but say that they can't change their situation, do, or buy DR stuff bc it costs them money. Pathetic! Double pathetic as everything is 50% off or more.
I'm not an elitist who think that only some people should have access to certain things or I am better off because I know something; quite the contrary as I love to share. I have given books to people who will probably never read it - and offered it to people for free because they do not know or care enough for the value that it really is to acquire it. Case in point: I offered one to an immediate relative who should be in front of the line for DR materials, perfect candidate for this book AND know about our triumphs with it, and you know what she said? "I don't have the time to read." She just lost a home, they have premium cable and it is always on to some music and entertainment channel, they are high in debt, already filed one bankruptcy, considering another one, in financial mess and hoping that they will have a home again one day doing exactly the same thing then that they are doing now! Surely, surely I say, nothing invested, nothing gained and these people do exist! Truly, have we ever seen a library as packed as the malls or even bookstores? Free does not mean better for everyone and even backs research suggesting that those things given as freebies are not as valued or cherished as the exact same item but acquired through some kind of cost, investment or exchange associated with it.
Lastly, is this not a DR Fan page or feeds viewable only to DR friends... sheesh do something else fruitful with your 2010 =)

One Year Bible (New Testament) for Busy Moms
5 Days later after the new year, I crack this book open and I am so glad I did. There is something in some of us that say, "Oh well, I'm behind/will be behind so I'll just do it later" and I am guilty of it but glad I ignored that voice today.
With this book, not only do you get a bit of the word but relevant advice, insights, and words for moms. January 1's tidbit says:
Jesus' family tree is filled with imperfect women - Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba. You need not be perfect to be a good mom; you just need to be willing to trust God to guide you.
